Subway tiles were popularised in the early 20th century by their use in the New York City subway system, hence their name. The NYC subway system used ceramic tile for station name identification and for colorful motifs to decorate the bland station walls since October 27, 1904, the day that the NYC subway system opened for business. Since then the subway tile has gone in and out of style and today it has once again taken on a renewed life.
The most popular size for subway tiles has traditionally been 3" x 6", but has grown to include 4" x 8" and 4" x 16" tiles.
Here you will find a wide array of Subway Tile sizes and colors in a variety of materials including ceramic and glass tiles. Our most popular is the traditional Porcelain Gloss White or Black Subway tile in both straight and beveled edge. You can choose standard colors; grey, taupe, silver, caramel, biscuit and more, or trend colors.
Glass Subway tiles are extremely popular when you want a classic proportion but a different look to your project. Popular colors include Cobalt, Bottle Green, Ocean Spray and White.
The customer that won our Design Project of the Month Contest for Febuary 2014 used a Glossy Super White 2" x 12" Glass Subway Tile. Click here to see her kitchen backsplash.
By choosing a contrasting grout color, you can create stunning looks. For example, a white wall subway tile with grey grout and a matt porcelain stone charcoal grey floor is truly modern and clean. Or try red or blue grout for a childrens bath or kitchen backsplash.
Subway tiles can also be installed in various patterns. From the traditional brick pattern to the modern stacked pattern and everything in between. Try adding a strip of Glass Mosaics here and there. The options and combinations are endless....So go ahead and let your imagination soar!
